NIKKEI HISTORY
-
Japanese migration to Peru began in earnest on April 3, 1899, when 790 contract laborers arrived in Callao aboard the Sakura Maru. Peru was the first Latin American country to establish diplomatic relations with Japan (1873) and the first to formally accept organized Japanese immigration, which was driven by a need for plantation labor on sugar and cotton farms.
Today, there are an estimated 100,000 to over 200,000 people of Japanese descent (Nikkei) in Peru, making it the third-largest such population in South America.
-
Initial Wave: Between 1899 and 1923, around 18,000 Japanese immigrants—mostly men from Okinawa, Gifu, Hiroshima, and Osaka—arrived to work under contract.
Brutal Conditions: Immigrants faced harsh, often inhumane conditions on coastal plantations, with low wages and high disease rates. Over 140 of the first 790 workers died within their first four-year contract.
Transition to Urban Life: To escape these conditions, many laborers moved to urban areas like Lima and Callao after their contracts ended, establishing small businesses such as barber shops, grocery stores (pulperías), and restaurants.
-
Settlement and Culture: Despite early hardships, the community grew, with Japanese immigrants (Issei) forming strong community organizations, schools, and hospitals.
"Picture Brides": Due to restrictions on women, many marriages were arranged via photographs ("picture marriage"), bringing Japanese women to Peru and enabling the establishment of families.
-
Wartime Hostility: Following the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, anti-Japanese sentiment surged, resulting in the freezing of assets, closure of businesses, and prohibition of Japanese schools.
Forced Deportation: Between 1942 and 1945, Peru, in collaboration with the United States, deported over 2,000 Japanese Peruvians to internment camps in the U.S.
Post-War Integration: After the war, the Nikkei community focused on rebuilding and integrating into Peruvian society, with Spanish becoming the primary language for the younger generation (Nisei).
-
Political Milestone: In 1990, Alberto Fujimori, a son of Japanese immigrants (Nisei), was elected as the 54th president of Peru, representing a significant turning point in the community's acceptance and status.
Nikkei Cuisine: Japanese influence blended with Peruvian ingredients to create Nikkei cuisine, a significant part of modern Peruvian culture.
Migration to Japan (Dekasegi): Starting in the late 1980s, many Nikkei returned to Japan for work due to economic crises in Peru, forming a new "dekasegi" (temporary work) migration wave.
